Microorganisms which are selected so that they are capable of utilising the lactone or its soluble salts of the formula as sole source of carbon, nitrogen and energy via malonyl lactone or its soluble salts of the formula and of not catabolising the latter, are described. Also described is a microbiological process for the preparation of malonyl-7-aminocephalosporanic acid derivatives or their soluble salts of the general formula with these microorganisms starting from cephalosporin C derivatives or their soluble salts of the general formula Also described is a process which starts from malonyl-7-aminocephalosporanic acid derivatives to prepare 7-aminocephalosporanic acid derivatives of the general formula .
