This femoral element, of the type consisting of two parts, respectively a stem (2) and a base (3) which can be assembled together by engagement of a frustoconical peg (9) with small slope, projecting from the assembly face (4a) of one part (2) into a frustoconical well (10) of complementary shape, emerging in the assembly face (4b) of the other part (3). The cross-section of the peg (9) and the well (10) is elliptical, the major axis (12) of the ellipse being contained in the plane defined by the axis (2c) of the stem (2) and that (3'a) of the base (3), after assembly, whereas, on the one hand, a set of a plurality of bases (3), with different neck lengths optionally offset and/or anteverted and, on the other hand, a set of a plurality of stems (2) of different dimensions are provided. <IMAGE>
