The sound of a sound pipe is determined by the interplay of the fundamental tone with the overtones. In this connection, the overtones have a non-harmonic relationship with the fundamental tone so that, in particular in the case of interplay with other instruments or other sound pipes, harmonically unsatisfactory overall sounds can arise. By arranging one or more additional masses, the individual part tones of the sound pipe can be influenced in different ways. The main problem is determining the positions and masses of the additional weights. In this case, the mathematical modelling of the vibrating overall system can decisively reduce the extent of empirical investigations. Using this tuning method, it is possible to produce sound pipes with completely determined sound ranges. Thus, for example, it can be achieved that the fundamental tone, together with the first two overtones, generates a major or minor triad, or that overtones have an octave relationship with the fundamental tone.
