The invention relates to a method for driving an electromagnet by means of which a hydraulic valve, in particular, can be operated. In the case of a known drive method for an electromagnet, the latter is initially driven, during an excitation phase, with a switching-on signal, and is subsequently driven with a clock signal at such a frequency, and with pulses of such a time duration, that a mean holding current flows. It is now provided according to the invention that the electromagnet is driven before being switched off by a permanent signal of such time duration that the current flowing through the electromagnet assumes a maximum value. In consequence, the scatter in the current level at which the electromagnet drops out can be reduced.
