PURPOSE: To provide a cursor controller provided with an optomechanical sensor without the need of the matching of an LED and a photodetector. CONSTITUTION: A ball 60 engaged with one or more shaft encoders 80A and 80B is provided, the respective shaft encoders 80A and 80B are provided with an encoder wheel and further, this pointing device provided with a monolithic optical sensing array for detecting optical pulses for indicating the rotary movement of the ball 60 is provided. The optical sensing array supplies plural resolutions and accurately tracks the rotary movement of the ball 60 without the need of masking. A comparator and a latch means are operated based on the output of the array and digital hysteresis is supplied.
