The subject-matter of the invention is a method and a device for determining the presence and/or for measuring the properties of solid or liquid materials in a space between opposite walls or wall sections. A sound (acoustic) signal is transmitted into the space starting from the outside of one wall or of one wall section. The sound signal has a frequency at which the differences in the speed of sound and/or the sound attenuation (dampening, reduction) are large in the case of gases and liquid or solid materials.
