A process for producing 1,4-dihydroperfluorobutane through decarboxylating dimerization of an alkali metal 2,2,3,3,-tetrafluoropropionate by electrolytically oxidizing the salt on a platinum anode in a solvent comprising at least one of water, alcohol and acetonitrile. Another process for producing 1,4-dihydroperfluorobutane through decarboxylation of an alkali metal 2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5,-octafluoropentanoate by thermally decomposing the salt in water, alcohol or a mixture of both. These processes enable 1,4-dihydroperfluorobutane (HFC-338pcc) to be produced from a readily available inexpensive starting material in a high yield.
