A liquid crystal display is provided with an array of micro lenses 441 which converge light onto respective pixels and compensating means comprising a second array of microlenses 442a which cause light rays emerging from the display to diverge. The micro lenses 442a may be piano-concave or plano-convex. The microlenses may be formed in a substrato by geometric shaping or by making use of composition differences. A black matrix may be provided on one substrate of the liquid crystal display to confine light to the pixel areas. The display is employed in a projector.
