The invention relates to a panel for laying on planar surfaces, having a bearing plate with the purpose of adapting thickness, and having a cover plate. The length (L) of a panel is double the size of its width (B) or is a whole-numbered multiple of the double width. The cover plate exhibits a basic element which is the same width as the panel and is twice as long as it is wide. The basic element comprises two halves which are mirror-symmetrical with respect to the axis which connects the centre points of its longitudinal sides, in the case of which a diagonal of one half is visually emphasised either by a woodgrain running along the diagonals at least in a sub-region or by a 45 DEG or 90 DEG grain joint which occupies at least part of the diagonals. <IMAGE>
