PURPOSE:To provide a communication processing unit capable of processing a packet signal, a frame relay signal and an ATM cell. CONSTITUTION:The processing unit is provided with a fixed length cell interface section 12 receiving an ATM fixed length cell whose path is selected by using a VPI/VCI and a variable length frame interface section 13 receiving a variable length frame signal. The variable length frame interface section adds the VPI/ VCI to the variable length frame signal. A communication processing section 11 makes communication processing to both the ATM fixed length cell and the variable length frame signal based on the VPI/VCI. Since the processing unit processes a packet signal, a frame relay signal and an ATM cell in this way, the processing unit deals for a long time with the technological innovation.
