摘要 <p>PURPOSE: To identify the presence of an unknown object under water by quantizing the intensity of each pixel into one of a plurality of levels, and comparing the distribution of pixel levels on range scanning in each cross range position. CONSTITUTION: A series of sonar pulses are transmitted toward the sea bottom in a range direction 16 vertical to the moving direction of a sonar system 10 while moving the sonar system 10 forward or a cross range direction 14, and a signal indicating the reflection intensity of a two-dimensional array of pixels 20 is stored. Each pixel 20 shows reflection intensity in a position of the range direction 16 and a specified position of the cross range direction 14. The intensity of each pixel 20 is therefore quantized into one of plurality of levels, and the distribution of pixel intensity levels on range scanning in a cross range position is compared with the distribution of pixel intensity levels on range scanning in another cross range position to identify an unknown object in the water. Concentration on the identification of the object is therefore possible so as to be able to support an operator with little experience.</p>
