In a control system and control method for a power steering device including a vehicle speed sensor 41 for detecting the travelling speed V of a vehicle, and a steering lock angle sensor 52 for detecting a steering lock angle ha of the vehicle, a calculation unit 54 for calculating the steering lock holding angle determines the steering lock angle holding coefficient Ks from a steering lock angle speed ha', an amount H of change of the steering lock angle and a lateral acceleration Gy. A fuzzy logic calculation unit 55 then specifies a power steering component according to a fuzzy logic rule using the vehicle speed V and a product V.Gy of vehicle speed V and the lateral acceleration Gy as input conditions (membership functions). In this way, a power steering component in a steering mechanism of the vehicle is adjusted to the desired power steering component. The control device and the control method of a power steering device can in this way provide an optimum steering characteristic in accordance with the high-speed travelling state of the vehicle.
