A process for the disposal of waste material comprises introducing the material into a reduction furnace 1 and at least partially converting the material into a mixture of volatile products, removing at least some of the volatile products from the mixture, adding oxygen to the mixture and combusting the oxygenated mixture in an electric power generating plant.
