A method for sorting bottles comprises the steps that the bottles (24) are taken from a bulk supply for conveyance in their longitudinal direction individually after one another, and that the bottles are caused to rotate about their longitudinal axis. During the rotation, a code on the bottle is read-off. The encoded information is employed for controlling a separator unit (25) by means of which the bottles are marshalled to one of at least two receptacles in response to the contents of the code. An apparatus for sorting bottles comprises a feeder device (1) for receiving the bottles (24) in bulk and for feeding them individually after one another in a feeding direction which is substantially parallel with the longitudinal direction of the containers, and at a first speed. The apparatus further includes a rotation device (2) for rotating the bottles (24) substantially about their longitudinal axis at the same time as the bottles are fed through or past the rotation device. In the region of the rotation device, there is disposed a sensor (3) for sensing a code on rotation of the bottles. Finally, the apparatus includes a separator device (4) which is operative to transfer the bottles to one of at least two receptacles in response to the contents of the code sensed by the sensor device. |
