For the environmentally friendly and cost-effective cleaning of surfaces using a high-pressure cleaning jet, it is proposed to cool the cleaning jet (9), upon discharge out of a spraying device (5), until cleaning-fluid crystals are formed, in particular ice crystals. In order to carry out this process, the invention proposes an apparatus which exhibits a cooling device (6) for supplying a coolant and cooling the cleaning jet (9). The ice crystals formed in the cleaning jet (9) result in an increased cleaning effect, while dispensing with chemical cleaning additives, with the result that disposal of the waste water is considerably simplified. <IMAGE>
