<p>The present invention is directed to methods of inhibiting the production of proinflammatory agents by macrophages by contacting the cells with a monocarboxylate such as nicotinic acid. The invention also includes methods of treating diseases that are associated with macrophage activation such as atherosclerosis; systemic lupus erythematosus; rheumatoid arthritis; inflammatory bowel disease; and diabetes mellitus.</p>
