PRODUCTION OF ALPHA-HYDROXY ISOBUTYRIC ACID ESTER

PURPOSE:To industrially advantageously obtain the subject ester useful for the production of a methacrylate ester in high yield and in high selectivity by reacting alpha-hydroxy isobutyric acid with an alcohol in the presence of a catalyst in a liquid phase. CONSTITUTION:alpha-Hydroxy isobutyric acid is reacted with an alcohol in the presence of an insoluble solid acid catalyst in a liquid phase to obtain the objective ester. An oxide (e.g. antimony trioxide) containing an element such as Sb, Zr or Bi is preferably used as the catalyst, and the reaction is preferably performed under pressure.
