According to the invention, a method for testing the airtightness of packaging comprises a reduction of the air pressure around the packaging, application of a mechanical pressure to the packaging, and determination of the compression of the packaging under the influence of the mechanical pressure applied. The method can be implemented with the aid of a device which is provided with a chamber to accommodate a packaging to be tested, means for generating the negative pressure (partial vacuum) in the chamber, a movable pressure member which is located in the chamber and is able to engage the packaging with a specific force, and measuring elements which record a displacement of the pressure member.
