Process for the desulphurisation of a composition containing sulphur. The process consists in supplying a composition containing sulphur, adding to the composition an aqueous medium such as water or, preferably, a basic aqueous solution and an absorbent for sulphur, such as a metal salt or oxide, and subjecting the resulting mixture to a hydrothermal reaction in specific conditions to obtain a desulphurised product. When the composition containing sulphur consists of vulcanised rubbers, the rubber can be converted into an oily mixture consisting chiefly of hydrocarbons by treatment in supercritical conditions while employing an aqueous medium, the reaction being facilitated by the addition of metal salts or oxides. Field of application: desulphurisation of substances and recovery of rubber.
