The invention relates to a device for automatically placing a label on an article of revolution, particularly a collar on the neck of a bottle. According to the invention, the automatic placing device (100) includes a mechanism (102) for step-by-step advance of a support sheet of adhesive labels, the said sheet passing over the horizontal edge (122) of a front plate (120) for individually detaching the labels, imparting a sudden bend on this sheet and then rolling up on a reel with a horizontal axis; a label-transfer mechanism (103) including two support stirrup pieces (130), this mechanism being displaceable in a horizontal plane between a retracted position for receiving the label detaching from the support sheet and an advanced position in which the two stirrup pieces (130) are placed beyond the vertical axis of the article, these two stirrup pieces (130) being equipped with a flexible applicator (135) for applying the label on more than half the periphery of the article; and a final application mechanism (104) with a pivoting arm (160) equipped with a flexible applicator (161) for final smoothing of the two ends of the label. <IMAGE>
