The stepwise transport of the band (1) is performed by two grippers (3, 4) which are moved backwards and forwards synchronously, each in their longitudinal direction, by a common drive (12-16). The grippers are each coupled alternately to the band (1) during their stroke in a particular direction, in order to impart to the said band a zigzag feed motion (2). In this case, the driving frequency of the feed device is half the cadence of the following tool and very high cadences can therefore be obtained. The construction and operation of the feed device are particularly simple.
