The present invention relates to a fluidized bed reactor and a method of treating a gas flow in a circulating fluidized bed reactor. According to the invention means are disposed in the vicinity of and are functionally connected to the flue gas duct end of the so-called central duct of the circulating material separator in the circulating fluidized bed boiler, said means equalizing the flow field of the flue gases exhausted from the central duct. It is a characteristic feature of the method of the invention that the gas flowing from the circulating fluidized bed reactor to the particle separator and having circulating material entrained therewith is first brought to a swirling motion or a vortex in the particle separator, whereby heavy particles of circulating material are passed to the periphery of the vortex flow. Gas is exhausted by the so-called central duct, preferably coaxially with the vortex flow, so that the gas vortex is maintained. The gas exhausted from the central duct is caused to flow through the equalizing means and to change its flow profile so that the velocity components contributing to the swirling motion of the gas essentially decreases and the flow pattern equalizes.
