The invention relates to an apparatus for compacting moulding sand by precompaction by means of an air pulse and subsequent further compaction by mechanical means. The air-tight closure of the mould cavity is here achieved by means of a covering element which includes a pressing ram. The essential point is that the sealing between the covering element and the pressing ram is achieved by means of an inward-projecting strip on the cover, the said strip bearing on its underside a seal which corresponds to the topside of the pressing element.
