Process for the disposal of brominated chlorofluoro hydrocarbons

CFCs, in particular brominated CFCs, the so-called halones, can be reacted in alkaline medium under comparatively mild subcritical conditions. Salts with the cation of the alkaline solution are formed as harmless final products from the halones, which badly destroy the ozone layer. Laboratory experiments have shown that the main part of the reaction takes place in the first minutes. In this case, as a result of the subcritical conditions it is advantageous to the process presented here that according to it the wall thicknesses of the high-pressure apparatus can be made relatively thin. In addition, halohydric acids, whose corrosive attack on the high-pressure apparatus could not be controlled, are not formed in the two-phase region. On the basis of the knowledge obtained on the laboratory scale, a plant concept is drawn up and described with whose aid halones and other CFCs can be disposed of completely continuously in an environmentally protective manner.
