The invention relates to a process and to an apparatus for compacting and collecting refuse, which process and apparatus can be used in the household, in trade or in industry. The object of the invention is to specify a process and an apparatus in the case of which the refuse can be sorted and the mechanically moving parts are less susceptible to destruction. The object is achieved according to the invention by a process and an apparatus in the case of which the refuse is compacted in a pressing chamber with a fixed press plate, in that the pressing chamber is drawn against the fixed press plate by means of a motor and force-transmission means. After compaction has been achieved, the base plate is first of all unlocked and swung open. Thereafter, the pressing chamber is pushed back, and the pressed article thereby falls out of the pressing chamber. At the same time, the base plate is swung closed and locked. The pressed article falls into that container of the collecting-container system on the rotatable apparatus which is assigned to its refuse type. <IMAGE>
