MODULAR INDUCTION FURNACE

A modular inductor (4) for a channel induction furnace comprises secondary circuit duct means in the form of an inverted U shaped ceramic pipe (7) and an open bottomed ceramic canoe (8). One end only (11) of the secondary passageway defined by the duct means is enlarged. The pipe (7) is encircled by a ferromagnetic core (5) with an energising primary coil (6) sleeved upon it. The inductor may be supported as an independent unit above the furnace pot with the ends of the passageway communicating directly with a charge of molten metal in the pot. The enlargement of one end of the passageway results in a strong flow of metal through it. Connector means (12) are provided to enable the passageway to be connected to a vacuum pump to enable the passageway to be filled with molten metal at start up.
