A transient overvoltage protection device in an arc-control chamber has two electrodes (2) which together form the inclined arcing-horns (6) separated by a divergent airgap (3) and also provide the connection terminals (5) to the supply network.An overvoltage monitoring and spark flashover section comprises a slotted insulator (10) aligned with a transverse hole (7) which collectively ensure a reliable response to transient potentials and initiate movement of the arc roots along the arcing-horn surfaces (8).The insulator (10) and parts of the arc chamber are of inorganic material to exclude carbon/soot contamination and the electrodes (6) are equipped with cooling fins (9) for improved energy rating/arc extinction
