The invention relates to a drive unit which can be employed universally for mechanically and biomechanically driven equipment and machines, especially bicycles for people and useful loads of all kinds. To convert a translatory motion into a rotary motion, this drive unit uses a crank and rocker mechanism (four-bar chain) instead of the conventional crank mechanism. The advantageous transmission properties eliminate many disadvantages of the crank mechanism, and biomechanical efficiency is increased by about 50%. At the same time, the possibility of connecting up high-pressure hydraulic cylinders increases the number of different variations of the mechanisms.
