The invention relates to a process for the preparation of homo- or copolyesters of aliphatic hydroxycarboxylic acids by ring-opening polymerisation of their cyclic esters in the presence of a catalyst, where the polymerisation is carried out at temperatures of from 60 to 180 DEG C in the presence of, as catalyst, an anhydrous Zr(IV) compound which is adequately soluble in the reaction mixture.
