The invention relates to a process and to a device for the controlled prestressing of a stuffing box (12, 20, 22). According to the invention this is carried out by means wherein the stuffing-box packing (20) is acted upon for the first compression with a given maximal pressure force, the pressure force (F) is then varied a number of times between the maximal pressure force and a given minimal pressure force, and the packing finally is compressed under a given nominal pressure force and in this state, is restrained in the chamber (12). During the variation of the pressure force (F), the corresponding spanning path (s) of the packing (2) is measured and registered to form a force-path diagram for use as a calibrating curve. The nominal pressure force can then be set with the aid of the calibrating curve by compression of the packing measurement of the spanning path.
