A solid state insoluble salt catalyst system for hydrocarbon conversion processes including the carbocationic polymerization of olefin monomer in the presence of a polar or non-polar reaction medium and the alkylation of a hydrocarbon substrate, which catalyst comprises (a) solid state catalyst component comprising at least one salt of a strong acid and a carbocationically active transition metal selected from Groups IIIA, IVA, VA and VIA of the Periodic Table of Elements, wherein said salt is insoluble in the reaction medium; and optionally, (b) cocatalyst component effective for promoting carbocationic polymerization.
