An evaporative transpiration pump is provided having an inlet (9) for liquids, an outlet (10) for gases, a porous body (1) disposed between the inlet (9) and the outlet (10) and heating means (6) disposed at the outlet side of the porous body(1) wherein the thermal conductively of said porous body (1) is no greater than 5Wm-1K-1, preferably no greater than 1Wm-1K-1. The pump is particularly suitablefor use in multi-column cryodistillation apparatus.
