When checking film-forming properties of a skin-forming material, the medium to be tested, in a containment, is cyclically contacted by a probe finger which, for the purpose of detecting skinning, dips into the surface of the medium, and where skin formation has not yet occurred moves on during change-over, and where the presence of media components on the test finger is determined by appropriate control instrumentation. Medium under test e.g. paint (5) is contained in an annular trough (2) over which is arranged a circular carrier (3,7) with a series of radially directed, pivotted finger probes (4) which are sequentially caused to dip into the surface of the medium (5) by an arm (6) mounted on a rotated disc (8); the fingers are retrieved from the liq. surface, following passage of the arm, under the action of springs (13). The finger probes have their immersion ends formed as enlarged `noses' or hooks (12) which take up a skin portion if present on the medium surface. The rotation speed of the disc can be adjusted to set the testing frequency.
