The invention relates to a refrigerator with a closed refrigerant circuit, in which a preferably fluorocarbon-free gas or gas mixture is used as refrigerant. The object of the invention is to create a safety device for the refrigerant circuit in a refrigerator, which safety device reduces the risk of explosion of the appliance. Arranged in the closed refrigerant circuit and/or in its direct proximity is a safety device which signals undesirable gas escape from the circuit and/or switches off the appliance in a non-sparking and non-contacting manner. The risk of explosion is thereby reduced, since sparking at the refrigerator itself can no longer occur. Optical and/or acoustic signalling at the same time informs the user that the refrigerant circuit has a defect and an expert has to be consulted.
