An airbag 18E is directed on inflation towards the joint 32 between seat cushion 28 and backrest 30. It is of a smaller internal volume than a conventional chest/head bag, and may therefore be inflated faster; a smaller inflator may also be used. It is particularly effective in restraining an unbelted occupant. The bag may be designed to inflate in two stages, being biased downwards then backwards (arrow 100) by a breakable thread in zone XII (see also fig. 12). As the bag is of unconventional shape, it may be basically cylindrical (fig. 5), or "shoe box" shaped (fig. 7). Although a front seat passenger's bag is illustrated, this type of bag may be used to restrain a driver, or a back seat passenger, by mounting the bag in the steering wheel, or in the back of the front seat, respectively. <IMAGE> |
