PURPOSE:To obtain an ethylene copolymer in improved copolymerization activity and conversion, by copolymerizing ethylene with an acrylate ester by using a catalyst containing a reaction product between a transition metal compound and a specified metal salt. CONSTITUTION:An ethylene copolymer is produced by copolymerizing ethylene with an acrylate ester of the formula in the presence of a Lewis acid compound by using a catalyst comprising (A) a reaction product between a transition metal compound and at least one compound selected from among an organic carboxylic acid metal salt, an organic metal phosphate, and a metal alcoholate and (B) an organometallic compound having a metal of Groups I -III of the periodic table. In the formula, R<1> is a halogen, H, a 1-20C alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, or aralkyl, and R<2> is a 1-20C alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, or aralkyl. As the transition metal compound used, a vanadium compound is particularly preferable. As the metals of Groups I -III of the periodic table, gallium, boron, and magnesium are preferable. |
