PURPOSE:To reproduce more excellent picture quality by discriminating whether a processed area is a character, a diagram or a pseudo halftone area and executing the processing accordingly. CONSTITUTION:An area discrimination section 2 makes pattern matching between a picture element pattern and a pattern indicated by a pattern table 3 and sends and stores gradation data and pattern data for area discrimination defined in advance to an intermediate data memory 4. An halftone picture estimate section 5 reads pattern data and gradation data from the memory 4 to execute processing according to a picture element block. At first, an estimate section 5 uses the pattern data to discriminate whether the picture element block is a character, a diagram or a pseudo halftone area. When the block is discriminated to be a character or a diagram, the estimate section 5 sets gradation data defined in the table 3 to be gradation data of all picture elements in the picture element block. When the block is the pseudo halftone, a mean value between gradation data of a picture element and its surrounding picture elements as to each picture element in the picture element block is set to gradation of the picture elements. |
