PURPOSE:To continuously and correctly detect the surface of a liquid. CONSTITUTION:The title device is provided with a beam emitting means 12 for emitting a parallel beam, a level detecting means 14 for carrying out the total reflection of the beam obtained by the means 12 in a non-immersing position with the level and for carrying out the emission of at least a part thereof into the liquid in an immersing position, and a light-reception means 16 for receiving the total reflection light obtained by the means 14. The position of the level is detected from light-reception information obtained by the means 16.
