PURPOSE:To constitute the device so that a character subjected to writing input can be displayed at a position conforming with a writing sensation. CONSTITUTION:In the character recognizing device for recognizing and displaying a character with regard to a stroke subjected to writing input through a display integral type tablet 1 constituted by superposing a display device on a tablet for a coordinate input, this device is provided with a writing character-string area extracting part 2 for extracting a circumscribed rectangle for the stroke subjected to writing input, and a reference point indicating part 3 for indicating a reference position for showing a position in which a result of character recognition is to be displayed for the circumscribed rectangle extracted by the writing character-string area extracting part 2. Also, this device is constituted by providing a character-string display position determining part 5 for determining a relation between a display position of a result of character recognition and a position of the circumscribed rectangle extracted by the writing character-string area extracting part 2, based on the reference position indicated by the reference point indicating part 3, and a character-string display part 6 for displaying the result of character recognition in accordance with the determination contents by the characterstring display position determining part 5.
