摘要 PURPOSE: To maximize the visual field of a display by maintaining a high contrast ratio at a wide visual field angle. CONSTITUTION: The normally white liquid crystal display includes a polarizer layer 422 and an analyzer layer 424 having a vertical absorbing axis. A liquid crystal layer 426 is arranged between both the layers 422, 424 and has an orientation vector indicating the twist of azimuth. First and second electrodes 412, 414 are arranged close to the 1st and 2nd main surfaces of the layer 426. A 1st negative double refraction compensating board layer 450 orientates its optical, axis substantially in parallel with the average direction of the optical axis in the norminal homeotropic center area of the layer 426 in its driving state and is arranged between the layers 422, 426. A 2nd negative double refraction compensating board layer 452 has substantially the same double refraction as that of the layer 450, orientates its optical axis substantially in parallel with the layer 450 and is arranged between the layers 424, 426.
