The device provides for a method of lifting the drive belt off the drive pulley in a system requiring the drive belt be loosened in order to provide for engine start up or to retain the power provided by an operating engine for other functions of the equipment. The device includes at least one carrier arm having the capability of rotating from the disengaged position between the drive belt and facing toward the driven pulley around the drive pulley, under the drive belt and away from the driven pulley to the engaged position. When the device is in the engaged position, the drive belt is lifted off the drive pulley and is kept in this position until the device is released by the operator. The carrier arm may have belt retainers to position the drive belt on the carrier arm and belt dividers for use in double or multi-drive systems. The device also includes a means of mounting the device to the equipment and a linkage assembly capable of manual or automatic activation of the device.
