The description relates to a process for the transition from single-cylinder-synchronous to sequential fuel injection in a six-cylinder four-stroke engine, in which: a) the triggering time for a transition process from single-cylinder-synchronous to sequential injection is established as soon as predetermined engine running conditions are met; and b) in the transition process, the first cylinder is that one for which the transition is made to sequential injection, which is next but one with a combustion stroke aftet the triggering time; and c) during the transition process the other cylinders continue to be supplied via single-cylinder-synchronous individual injectors until their next induction stroke and then reset to sequential injection. By the fact that resetting is not effected at the induction stroke for all the cylinders but the first one to be reset is determined using the combustion stroke, it is possible, regardless of the mutual timing of induction strokes and triggering times, always to ensure that no cylinder receives too rich or too lean a mixture.
