Used as a rule in refrigerated-cargo ships are mechanical air-circulation systems in which cooled air is forced at constant flow through the cargo so that the correct temperature of the cargo can be maintained. A floor grating with holes for distributing the cooling air in the cargo hold is preferably used, the cargo standing on pallets or directly on the floor grating and the air being directed through the floor grating and then through the cargo. So that the supply of cooled air under the cargo stacked on pallets (3) can be better distributed and optimised, even for systems without a floor grating in which the air is blown directly under the pallets, a method of distributing the air and an apparatus for this have been provided, in which the air throw (4) of the air flow supplied under the cargo pallets can be varied. By controlling the fan output (1), e.g. by a frequency converter (5), an air flow pulsating in a variable manner and having a resulting, variable air throw (4) of the air flow under the pallets can be produced, which optimises the distribution of the air under the cargo pallets, and a situation can be effectively avoided in which not enough air or no air at all is supplied to certain areas of the cargo. <IMAGE>
