A method for checking the tightness of a tank venting installation is specified, in which a) upon fulfilling a predetermined test condition, the value of the decay gradient of a differential pressure built up in the tank venting installation, beginning from a test differential pressure in the case of a sealed tank venting installation, is determined and then, if the determined value is smaller in magnitude than a threshold decay gradient, conclusions are drawn as to the tightness of the installation; wherein b) the differential pressure is also built up cautiously if the test condition is not fulfilled. In the case of methods previously disclosed, a start was only made with the building-up of the test differential pressure when the condition for the testing for tightness had been fulfilled. Using the method according to the invention or the device according to the invention, respectively, on the other hand, the determination of the value of the decay gradient of the differential pressure already built up can hence be started directly after fulfilling the test condition. <IMAGE>
