The system, eg for use in a lift truck, comprises a servo motor acting upon a steering column 10a via a clutch element 60 when torque is manually applied to a steering wheel to rotate a steering wheel side portion 12a of the steering column relatively to a steering gear mechanism side portion 16a of the steering column. The clutch element 60 is mounted on the steering wheel side of the steering column so as to be axially movable relatively thereto, being displaceable via a guide 62 either towards or away from the steering wheel depending on the direction of steering wheel rotation. When the clutch element 60 is axially displaced it moves into frictional contact with one or other, depending on the direction of rotation, of a pair of coaxial driven friction disks 54, 56 which have friction layers 70, 72. The drive motor may be electromotive. <IMAGE>
