The invention relates to a stern (1) for a ship, such as a container ship, in which the breaking of a stern wave and the stern-wave generating resistance can be reduced owing to the fact that the steepness of the wave is kept below the wave breaking limit and yet the requisite lateral stability of the ship is maintained. For this purpose, a stern (1) according to the invention has a fin (5) at the stern end (1a). The fin (5) extends largely over the entire breadth of the stern end (1a). The length between the fin rear end and the stern end (1a) at a draught level (WL) with a fully laden or overladen ship is 1 to 2 % of the ship's length between the perpendiculars, and the bottom line of the fin (5) merges into the stern bottom line (2a) and rises convexly aft and towards the top. <IMAGE>
