The mechanism is provided to enable the connecting rods of the pedals and bottom bracket bearing assembly of a bicycle to lengthen and/or shorten during the downward and/or upward, respectively, rotational paths of the actual actuating pedals, giving rise to the fact that, during the path of greater force, which is the downward path, the connecting rod lengthens and acquires greater leverage, whilst in the ascending path, where the force is practically zero, the connecting rod shortens, thereby reducing the circumferential path of the actual pedal. The mechanism is based on the fact that the shaft 3 on which the connecting rods are mounted is fixed and is secured eccentrically inside a hollow cylinder 2 which, on its periphery, has individual bearings 5 to which are secured the bushes 13 in which there are freely rotating rollers 12 emerging from the inner face of the arms 7 which constitute the connecting rods together with the pieces 6 mounted precisely at the ends of the shaft 3, the arm 7 being linked to the piece 6 with the possibility of axial displacement with respect to said piece 6. <IMAGE>
