Method for the extraction of features of linear structures in digital images

The method is based on a directional field which is discontinuous at the edges of linear structures but is continuous inside and outside the linear structures. By this means, even very narrow lines which are barely visible in the original image can be amplified in terms of their intensity. The method is largely independent of the setting of external parameters. It is particularly suitable for the the three-dimensional reconstruction of blood vessels to support the doctor in the diagnosis, radiation therapy and planning of operations.
