In a method for operating a vehicle with a hydrostatic travelling drive, a signal (3) for a desired speed is specified by a transmitter (2) and the associated ratio (ides) in the travelling drive is set at a limited adjustment rate. In order to achieve good performance under all operating conditions, the ratio is set in accordance with predetermined characteristics by means of a dynamic filter (4) as a function of the signal (3) of the transmitter (2) and of the instantaneous actual speed (vactual). For the method, a control device is provided which has a dynamic filter (4) connected to a transmitter (2) for the desired speed of the vehicle and serving the purpose of setting the ratio (ides) in the hydrostatic travelling drive. The filter (4) has a first-order delay with a limited slope, the time constant and upper slope limit and lower slope limit of which are defined by characteristics as a function of the signal (3) of the transmitter (2) and the actual speed (vactual) of the vehicle.
