This process consists, in a first step of reduction, in opening the keratinic linkages of the hair by application of a reducing agent chosen from an amino or amidothiol or one of the salts thereof, followed, in a second step of oxidation, in reforming these linkages using an oxidising composition or by the action of atmospheric oxygen, the process being characterised in that before or at the same time as the reducing agent is applied, at least one alkali metal bromide, alkaline-earth metal bromide or ammonium bromide is applied to the hair, as a doping agent for the reducing agent. The composition for carrying out the process contains, in combination, in a suitable cosmetic vehicle, at least one amino or amidothiol or one of the salts thereof as a reducing agent, and at least one alkali metal bromide, alkaline-earth metal bromide or ammonium bromide as a doping agent for the reducing agent. This process and the composition for carrying it out make it possible to obtain an enhancement in the qualities of the permanent waving, especially in the curliness.
